Supporting the Communities to Protect Namibian Wildlife

The Namibian Association of Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Support Organisations (NACSO), is the support body for Namibia’s internationally acclaimed approach to conservation; the communal conservancy program.

“Poaching is putting severe strain on our resources. We now have to find other resources to fight poaching. It is one of out biggest challenges at the moment. You ask how we are addressing it, and we believe that our biggest weapon is the people themselves. People live with wildlife and a lot of our wildlife is in communal areas.”nacso-director-maxi-louis

In this episode of the MYD Earth Show, we speak to one of the directors of NASCO, Maxi Louis, about Namibia’s communal conservancy programs and the real beneficiaries of these programs.

“We forget that one of the biggest threats we have at the moment is habitat loss and human encroachment on habitat. These are challenges we face, not only in Namibia but all over the world.”

In this MYD Earth podcast we find out:

  • About the 82 conservancies in Namibia and how they have been set up
  • How in communal areas things need to integrated to succeed
  • The process of how quotas are allocated and who benefits from hunting quotas
  • The buy in of the community to protecting our wildlife
