Sustainable and Organic Gardening

After the recent lifting of some water restrictions in Windhoek, we invited a Namibian Botanist, Permaculturalist and Agro-Ecologist, to join us for this episode of the MYD Earth Show.

“Gardening is an important way of making a difference because the things you choose to eat, which for most of us means the things you choose to buy, determine what sort of agriculture you support…. If you grow your own food you are actually reducing carbon dioxide emissions.”

Here we discuss healthy living, sustainable gardening in an arid environment, organic gardening and permaculture with the owner of Eco Living Namibia, Fabian von Hase.

“There is a very famous scientists, his name is Rockström, and he came up with planetary boundaries, it’s a concept of the global ecosystem can be stressed by humans or other factors, up until a certain point. They came up with nine boundaries, so we’re talking about things like the extinction rate of animals and plants, the rate of turn over of phosphorus and nitrogen in the biosphere, things like that. And out of these nine boundaries, we’ve already exceeded four.”

In this MYD show podcast we find out:

  • Advice for growing your garden in the most environmentally, and water, friendly way
  • The benefits of using a permaculture design
  • Why we need to start looking at all elements of sustainability today.
