#TheTribeExclusive Featuring Matongo Family
This legendary Namibian music trio first stole our hearts when they broke onto the scene over two decades ago. Many Namibians grew up to the music of these guys and they rose to fame with their unique sound and epic performances.
Starting out as dancers, Themba Matongo (Thembizo) and Strauss Lunyangwe (Stravo) were introduced very early on to the competitive nature of the entertainment industry when they took part in dance contests.
“We started out as a Kwaito dancing group called Trompies back in the days and went through many competitions. I can say today that there was no group in Namibia that ever beat the Trompies back then,” says Thembizo.
The two eventually met Arthur Nanub (Damara Dik Ding) who lived in the same neighborhood as them. “We created a bond from our love of music and that’s where we transitioned from Kwaito dancers to performing artists,” he adds.
While they have gone through the trials and tribulations that most music groups go through, Matongo Family has continued to remain friends. They credit the strong relationship and shared love for music as the reason they have managed to survive the music industry for so long.
The three have used their voice to also shed light on social issues facing Namibians, especially for the residents of Katutura where they grew up. The #SaveTheKatuturaHall initiative is one such initiative that they were part of. With the sole purpose of renovating Katutura’s oldest community hall, the initiative saw various community members, public personalities and celebrities come together to save the hall which had been run down and dilapidated.
After all their years in the industry, the ups and the downs, Matongo Family has come full circle. They have now branched into Television with their own reality show which brings their raw, unedited story to One Africa TV.
‘Family Affairs’ premieres on One Africa TV on Sunday, 24 November at 18h00.
