Yango promotes driver wellbeing with mental health awareness event
Ride-hailing service Yango, a part of a global tech company Yango Group, has hosted a groundbreaking event focused on men’s mental health awareness, under the theme “Drive to Thrive: Mental Health Matters,” aimed at igniting open conversations, providing resources, and empowering men to prioritise their general well-being and mental health. The event was in collaboration with Uni-Health Namibia and was held at Integrico restaurant on Wednesday, 26th June 2024 to mark Mental Health Awareness Month.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Johnco Van Der Linde, Psychological Counselor at UniHealth, emphasised the importance of communication and creating safe spaces for men to express themselves without judgement.
“Communication is a skill, it’s one we don’t usually learn as we grow up, especially with societal expectations on me not to be too vocal about their problems, but it’s a skill we need to know and use. We should also create safe spaces where we can communicate freely without judgement,” he said while encouraging men to utilise available mental health services and seek professional help when needed.
Country Manager for Yango in Namibia, CJ Dumeni, also stressed the company’s commitment to the well-being of its partner drivers and the community. He emphasised the importance of events like “Drive to Thrive” in creating a supportive environment where drivers feel empowered to address mental health matters. “This kind of event was pivotal for us as an opportunity to create a safe space for the partner drivers, where we could also provide them with the tools needed to navigate the daily challenges, especially in their work,” he said.
Several attendees actively participated in a Q&A session during the panel discussion, openly sharing the challenges they face in life, work and generally, as men.
Erlo Isaacks, a student and Yango partner driver, praised the event for being informative, with speakers guiding the drivers on handling challenging work situations. “The event was definitely informative. We were taught how to handle difficult situations in our work, how to handle difficult clients and we got to hear from other drivers as they shared their real life experiences and how they dealt with certain critical situations,” he said.
This event is part of a series of projects lined up by Yango to emphasise its commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of all partners, partner drivers and passengers who utilise the service.
