Powering our Future with MIME: Engineering and Environmental Geology

Michelle Hailonga, Environmental Geologist at the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, joined us in studio to explore the critical work being done at the intersection of geology and environmental protection.

As Namibia’s mining sector continues to grow, so does the responsibility to manage its environmental impact especially when it comes to our scarce water resources, soil health, and air quality.

The Environmental Geology subdivision at the Department of the Geological Survey is dedicated to protecting the country’s limited and vulnerable natural resources, especially water, soil, and biodiversity, in areas affected by mining.

The team plays a central role in monitoring environmental impacts, identifying contamination risks, and supporting responsible land use and resource management.

The Environmental Geology subdivision directly supports Namibia’s efforts to protect its fragile ecosystems while managing the impacts of mining and industrial development.
