In a surprising move that breaks from Venezuela’s longstanding tradition, President Nicolás Maduro has officially decreed that Christmas celebrations in the country will begin today, October 1. Traditionally, Venezuelan Christmas festivities focus on December and early January, centered around religious observances and family gatherings, this move is surely unusual.
