Retired Namibian police spokesperson Edwin Iheka Kanguatjvi has joined the race for the upcoming regional elections under Popular Democratic Movement (PDM).
He will be contesting as the Otjombinde Constituency councillor in the Omaheke Region.
This will be his second time contesting in the constituency, having previously run in 2004 as a NUDO candidate, before joining PDM in 2023.
Kanguatjivi described himself as a ‘child of political upbringing’, shaped by his time in exile before returning to Namibia.
He said the key issues on his agenda includes improving communication infrastructure, upgrading road network, and bringing services closer to the constituents by putting up a satellite office in the area.
Kanguatjivi said the inhabitants currently travel 300 kilometres to Talismanus which is the seat of the constituency.
He added that once elected, he will negotiate for better prices for livestock, noting that some buyers have been taking advantage of local farmers for far too long.
Another priority is addressing cross-border crimes, as the Otjombinde Constituency shares a border with Botswana and has experienced incidents of stock theft from both sides.
In addition, he will advocate for the San community inclusion within the government or regional structures . He pointed out that San people are often only remembered during elections and forgotten afterwards.
“ Now my questions is , are they not even capable of being cleaners in the constituency offices, or if there is one educated to be a secretary,” remarked Kanguatjivi.
When asked what sets him apart from other candidates, Kanguatjivi cited his 20 years of experience in public service, emphasising his knowledge of budgeting processes, procurement, and handling misconduct cases
