Lüderitz community welcomes planned port expansion

By: Hertha Ekandjo

The Lüderitz community has expressed strong support for the planned expansion of the Lüderitz port, which is expected to bring significant economic and development benefits to the coastal town.

Lüderitz Town Council public relations officer, Elwin !Gaoseb, said the expansion would strengthen the town’s fiscal position through increased rates and taxes generated by port-related activities.

!Gaoseb added that the project fits into Lüderitz’s long-term vision as a logistics and industrial hub for southern Namibia, particularly under the Southern Corridor Development Initiative, where common-user facilities are being considered.

!Gaoseb further noted that the project aligns with Lüderitz’s strategic position as a logistics and industrial hub for southern Namibia. He explained that the town forms part of the Southern Corridor Development Initiative, under which common-user facilities are being considered, and the port expansion will support this broader vision.

Echoing the PRO’s sentiments, //Kharas Regional Governor Dawid Gertze, said the region fully supports the project, noting that emerging industries such as oil, gas and green hydrogen require increased port capacity.

“Given the changing dynamics in the South, we must adjust the capacity of our hub to accommodate the expected influx. The appropriate response is to expand and deepen the port,” he said, adding that the project will create jobs and transform the face of Lüderitz.

Local resident Petrus Iyambo said the development brings hope to the community, particularly for unemployed youth.

He added that the expansion will improve infrastructure and support the town’s continued growth as Namibia’s green energy sector continues to expand.

Namport is undertaking expansion of the port to transform it into an oil, gas, and green hydrogen hub involving new berths, land reclamation, and dedicated facilities.

This is being supported by EU/Rotterdam expertise, and is aimed at doubling capacity, creating jobs, and boosting Namibia’s economy by leveraging offshore energy projects and strategic positioning for SADC trade.
