CAN calls for strengthened cancer services in rural Namibia

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) has renewed its call for increased and targeted cancer healthcare services in the country’s remote and rural areas.
The association’s CEO, Rolf Hansen, said while progress has been made in cancer care, significant gaps remain for state patients, particularly those living in rural regions.
He stressed that patients diagnosed in distant parts of the country require urgent referrals to Windhoek for treatment. This process involves not only transportation, but also accommodation and access to nutritional meals.
He said the association plays an active role in stepping in to meet these needs and to support patients throughout their treatment journey.
Hansen also also acknowledged the vital role played by other stakeholders, expressing appreciation for the support received from corporate partners and private communities.
This collaboration was described as essential in assisting vulnerable community members who lack private insurance or medical aid, and are unable to afford private medical services.
CAN indicated that it works closely with the health ministry, recognising that the fight against cancer cannot be undertaken by a single ministry, department, or organisation alone.
