Late Geingob saw governance as a tool to improve people’s lives

Former President Nangolo Mbumba says the late Hage Geingob measured governance by its impact on people’s lives. 

Speaking at the inaugural Dr Hage G. Geingob Town Hall Conversation at the University of Namibia on Monday, Mbumba said Geingob’s vision of governance went beyond politics, focusing on development, democracy and service to citizens. 

While Geingob championed strong institutions and development-driven governance, his presidency faced growing public criticism over unemployment, inequality, housing and economic hardship issues that shaped political contestation within Swapo and nationally ahead of the 2024 elections. 

Mbumba recalled Geingob’s belief that government structures should be responsive, effective and capable of addressing social and economic inequalities.

Former Cabinet minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana remembered Geingob as a commanding yet approachable leader who mentored a generation of Swapo politicians. 

National Assembly former Speaker Peter Katjavivi reflected on Geingob’s belief of inclusive leadership, open dialogue and challenging people to think deeply rather than accepting ideas.
