Meatco calls veterinary fence debate a political argument

By: Envaalde Matheus
Meatco CEO Albertus Aochamub says the debate over the veterinary fence has become an artificial political argument, saying meat from the north has already been available to consumers on both sides of the cordon fence.
Aochamub says the Rundu abattoir is fully export and halal certified and could help serve the African as well as Middle Eastern markets.
Aochamub said the FMD area covers Zambezi, while the rest of the northern regions up to Kunene are classified as an FMD controlled area.
He said the same markets served by the Windhoek factory can also be served by the Rundu facility, but under different operating conditions, including a 30 to 40 day quarantine period before animals can be slaughtered.
Aochamub said the FMD crisis should be used as an opportunity to rethink the industry, diversify export markets and reduce dependence on a single major buyer.
