An Ode To Game of Thrones

I spent 430 minutes binge watching all the episodes of the final season of Game of Thrones.

I wasn’t ready?! I’m still shoock!

You probably hated the ending, it seems most people did. This blog is not about the ending, but the journey.

Ever so often a series will come along that connects with an audience and brings solidarity amongst them:

Middle aged men had “The Sopranos”.

Middle-aged woman had “Sex and The City.”

“Breaking Bad” had both.

The young and carefree had “Friends”.

The teens had “Vampire Diaries.”

Finally, there was something for us dorks to immerse ourselves into. Nothing screams dork than a medieval fantasy series that allows us to play “dress up”, our most favourite past time.

When it was announced that George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” is to be brought to the small screen, geeks everywhere flooded chat-rooms with awe and anticipation.

This was not just a story of kings and queens, dragons and wolves, knights and renegades, Whitewalkers and wildlings, liars and honest men. It was a story about absolute Power, the Iron Throne-the corrupter. The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros- the chess board.

Each season brought us closer to the depth of human degradation and the cost of bravery.

We will forever remember the scenes that had us reeling, screaming and weeping:

  • The execution of Ned stark
  • The Red Wedding
  • The Battle Of Winterfell
  • The Murder of Dany

The memorable lines:

“You know nothing, Jon Snow.” — Ygritte

“A lion does not concern himself with the opinion of sheep.” — Tywin

“Nothing f*cks you harder than time.” — Davos Seaworth

“Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder.” — Littlefinger

“Winter is coming” — Pretty much everyone

As episode 6 of season 8 came to a close, I found myself feeling like…..like a Sinead O’connor song. The melancholy of “Nothing compares to 2U”.

Not yet ready to fully let go I, like a jilted in-denial lover, am still clinging on. I have already begun re-watching it all over again from season 1. Go ahead, roll your eyes at me. You’re probably going to do the same thing anyway…lol!
