About Michael Chandler:
Michael Chandler is a creative, an artist, a designer, a curator and a retailer but most of all he is an individual with a zest for life that fully encapsulates the concept of living your passion. An inspiration when he starts talking, one is mesmerized by his positive energy and his vast spectrum of ideas. Always open to explore ideas, this is the man you’ll want on your team – fun, enthusiastic and living in the moment.
Growing up in the Eastern Cape, Michael always had a keen interest in design. After studying Art History at UCT, he began working at Stephan Welz & Sotheby’s. Surrounded by beautiful objects, the process of examining and cataloging taught him about design and taste spanning more than 400 years. After Sotheby’s he became research assistant to Deon Viljoen, the Cape Dutch trade antiques dealer, who ignited his passion for early Cape Furniture and Dutch-Trade pieces of which the design influence is largely visible in his own creations. Michael finds his inspiration for new designs in South African history & heritage and then uses modern materials and methods to craft it. He is the owner and curator of Chandler House and Voorkamer Gallery both situated in Cape Town’s Church Street. He has collaborated with Mr. Price and has recently been awarded a project with fellow artist Lucie de Moyencourt, by a wine farm to design and make a mural from ceramic tiles (30cm x 30cm) spanning over 30sqm.
