Environment ministry addresses concerns over Sossusvlei concession rights
The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has acknowledged public and tour operator concerns regarding the recently awarded concession rights at Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park. In a statement, the Ministry reassured stakeholders that the concession does not restrict registered tour operators and lodges from the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) from taking clients into the area free of charge.
The Ministry emphasised that the concession is designed to enhance business opportunities for NTB-registered tour operators by addressing illegal operators and unsuitable vehicles, such as buses and trucks. The primary goal of the concession is to protect the environment and maintain Sossusvlei’s status as a World Heritage site.
Additionally, the Ministry clarified that only the concessionaire is permitted to pick up tourists from the 2×4 parking area, ensuring that access remains controlled.
Importantly, the Ministry reiterated that it cannot privatise any areas within Protected Areas. Stakeholders and the public will be kept informed regarding any further developments related to the implementation of the concession.
This initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism while safeguarding the natural beauty of Sossusvlei for future generations.
