Erongo RED launches anti copper theft campaign

Erongo RED has launched a campaign urging the community to report copper cable theft.

The campaign, titled :Be a Copper Theft Stopper, encourages residents, businesses and community leaders to report suspicious activity and safeguard critical infrastructure.

In a statement issued by the company’s
corporate communication & marketing specialist, Benjamin Nangombe said copper theft is a problem that continues to disrupt daily life and strain essential services.

“Copper cable theft is not just about stolen materials. It has real consequences for everyone. When cables are stolen or infrastructure is damaged, areas are left without electricity for hours. Homes are left in the dark, businesses are forced to close, and essential services such as hospitals, schools, and traffic management systems are affected,”he said.

Nangombe said exposed wires can lead to injuries or even loss of life, while damaged streetlights and traffic systems can compromise public safety.

He said that the cost of repairs and replacements also puts pressure on electricity tariffs, with consumers having to carry the financial burden.

The campaign involves Erongo RED working closely with the Namibian police, with incentives offered for information that leads to the apprehension of offenders.

It allows individuals to report incidents anonymously, with information received handled confidentially.

The public is thus encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling, sending an SMS, or sending a WhatsApp message to 081 608 6925 (Namibia Police).

The community can also report by calling the toll-free number 96000, contacting +264 81 144 2373, or reporting the incident at the nearest police station.
