Govt plans mandatory dashcams to curb rising road accidents

Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi  said the government plans to introduce mandatory dashboard cameras (dashcams) in both private and public vehicles. Nekundi said this is in response to the growing number of road accidents across the country.

According to Nekundi, the initiative is a proactive step aimed at strengthening road safety and enhancing accountability among motorists. He noted that Section 42(1)(b) of the Road Traffic and Transport Act of 1999, empowers the Minister to revoke or suspend a driver’s licence if the driver is deemed a danger to the public. Footage from dashcams would provide objective evidence to identify reckless or negligent driving, making it easier for authorities to take decisive action.

“As custodians of public safety, we have a duty to use every tool at our disposal to protect our citizens. The introduction of dashcam technology will not only deter dangerous driving but will also empower responsible drivers and support law enforcement agencies in holding offenders accountable,” said Nekundi.

The Ministry will begin public and stakeholder consultations tomorrow. A nationwide survey will be launched immediately to gather input from citizens, transport operators, civil society groups, and other interested parties. The Ministry emphasised that public engagement is crucial to shaping the final policy.

“All Namibians are encouraged to take part in the survey so their views, concerns, and suggestions can inform this important national initiative,” the statement read.
