Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Esperance Luvindao, said a total of 6 844 diabetes cases were recorded during the 2024/2025 financial year across all age groups.

The majority – 6 345- were reported among adults, while 377 were recorded in children aged 5 to 17, and 122 in children under the age of five.

Luvindao said this is a slight decrease from the 8 073 cases reported in 2023/2024, when 5 950 adults, 646 adolescents, and 133 young children were diagnosed.

In Namibia, nearly 7% of adults around 90 000 people are affected. Dr. Luvindao said these figures demonstrate the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases on the country’s health system.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 830 million people worldwide are living with diabetes, with the majority residing in low- and middle-income countries.
