NUST celebrates 724 graduates at 2024 October ceremony


The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) awarded qualifications to 724 graduates during its 2024 October Graduation Ceremony. The event celebrated academic excellence while reinforcing NUST’s commitment to advancing Namibia’s national development goals through responsive education and impactful research.

Among the graduates, Abel Siseho Mubita, a security guard at the university, emerged as an inspiring example of the transformative power of education. His journey from campus security to becoming a graduate is a testament to the impact that perseverance and learning can have on individuals and communities.

Empowering a Diverse Cohort of Graduates

The Ceremony highlighted NUST’s broad appeal and impact, with a graduating class that included 32 international students. Three candidates received doctoral qualifications: two (2) from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics and one (1) from the Faculty of Health, Natural Resources, and Applied Sciences.

Responding to Namibia’s Needs Through Higher Education

Through its tailored curricula and a strong focus on research, NUST continues to prepare graduates to meet the demands of Namibia’s rapidly evolving economy. Speaking on the institution’s mission, NUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof Erold Naomab, remarked, “Research and innovation remain at the heart of what we do at NUST. We remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge, fostering partnerships with industry and government, and empowering our students and faculty to become leaders in their fields. Today, we confidently send our graduates out into the world as ambassadors of NUST”.

Dr Leake Hangal, the NUST Interim Council Chairperson, said: “We believe that as graduates from this university, we have equipped you to face and shape the future: your own future, that of your parents and loved ones and indeed that of your country. We are confident that your education
will help our nation to address and resolve the challenges that are facing it. These include the challenges of unemployment, of economic inequality, of protecting and sustaining our environment and making Namibia a prosperous, innovative and competitive nation. The solutions to our nation’s challenges cannot come from outside but from within the men and women of our country, many of them in this hall today”.

Inspiring Stories: From Security Guard to Graduate

Among this year’s graduating class is Mr Abel Siseho Mubita, who works as a security guard on NUST’s campus. His story exemplifies the transformative power of education. Through perseverance and dedication, Mr Mubita has earned a Bachelor of Criminal Justice in Policing. “I always believed that my dream of obtaining a degree was possible, no matter how challenging the journey would be. One’s past does not determine their future,” he said. Mr Mubita’s achievement underscores NUST’s ethos of empowering individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of their circumstances.

Graduation Statistics

This October, NUST will proudly confer degrees, diplomas, and certificates across various faculties:

  • 387 graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, Human Sciences, and Education
  • 132 graduates from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics
  • 141 graduates from the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment
  • 64 graduates from the Faculty of Health, Natural Resources, and Applied SciencesThe graduating cohort includes 382 male students and 342 female students, exemplifying NUST’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity in higher education.
