35 Years of Namibian Pride

Thirty-five years ago, the Namibian flag was raised, a symbol of a hard-won independence, a beacon of hope after decades of struggle.

Today, we celebrate not just the anniversary of that momentous occasion, but the resilience, unity, and unwavering spirit that have defined our nation. From the arid landscapes of the Namib to the lush greenery of the Kavango, Namibia stands as a testament to the power of self-determination.

Our journey has been one of transformation, a testament to the vision of our founding fathers and mothers. As our first president, Dr. Sam Nujoma, so eloquently stated, “The struggle for the liberation of Namibia was a long and bitter one. But we never lost hope. We never gave up the fight. We knew that one day, we would be free.” That unwavering belief, that collective dream, has been the foundation upon which we have built our nation.

We have faced challenges, yes, but we have also achieved remarkable progress. We have strengthened our democracy, expanded access to education and healthcare, and worked tirelessly to build a more equitable society. As Hifikepunye Pohamba, our second president, reminded us, “Independence is not just about political freedom. It is also about economic freedom, social justice, and the well-being of all our people.”

And now, as we embark on a new chapter, we do so with renewed optimism and a sense of profound excitement. Namibia is welcoming its first female president, a historic moment that signifies a giant leap forward in our journey towards gender equality and inclusivity. This milestone is a testament to the progress we have made, and a powerful symbol of the future we are building.

The words of the late Dr. Libertina Amathila, a stalwart of our liberation struggle, ring truer than ever: “We must continue to fight for the empowerment of women, for their voices to be heard, and for their contributions to be valued.” Our new president embodies that spirit, bringing a fresh perspective and a commitment to building a Namibia where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As we look to the future, we are filled with hope and determination. We are a nation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and dreamers. We are a nation rich in natural resources, cultural diversity, and boundless potential. We are a nation united in our commitment to building a brighter future for all.

Let us remember the sacrifices of those who came before us, and let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Let us continue to build a Namibia that is a shining example of freedom, justice, and prosperity for all. As we celebrate 35 years of independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a nation that truly lives up to the promise of its birth. Happy Independence Day, Namibia! The best is yet to come.
