International Leopard Day: Save a Spot for the Spotted

May 3rd is International Leopard Day, a reminder that one of Africa’s most iconic big cats is disappearing fast. Leopards have lost 75% of their natural range and face threats like habitat loss, human conflict, and illegal trade.

Despite their adaptability, leopards are now Vulnerable, and in South Africa, they’re extinct in over 60% of the country. In Namibia, many live outside protected areas, increasing their risk.

But there’s hope. With better protection, reduced conflict, and public support, these stealthy cats can still thrive.

This International Leopard Day, Wild Africa urges governments, communities, and conservation partners to help save a spot for these iconic species by giving them space and mitigating human-wildlife conflict for peaceful coexistence.

Let’s make space for leopards—before it’s too late.
