OWN YOUR MARK. PROTECT YOUR BRAND.
|As a creative, you are probably used to a lot of late night brainstorming sessions, going over your ideas into the wee hours of the morning. And then finally! A light bulb! You’ve finally nailed it! Your unique idea. Now the question is how do you protect it from being copied or used without your knowledge? Enter the Business and Intellectual Property Authority (BIPA). |
In line with its mandate to protect entrepreneurship and innovation, BIPA has embarked on a campaign to educate the public about the importance of registering their trademark and protecting their brand.
A trademark is a sign/mark capable of distinguishing the goods or services from one enterprise from that of another. The first leg of BIPA’s “OWN YOUR MARK. PROTECT YOUR BRAND.” campaign, focuses on the creative industry, with artists often falling victim to their hard work used without their knowledge.
Graphic Designer Betty Sibeso, says ‘I get to create lasting brands for my clients that they will use for years, but there is also the risk of my own work being used by others without my knowledge’ That’s why she says she decided to protect her brand and register her trademark with BIPA.
Social Influencer, Cherol K also resonates with Sibeso’s sentiments and noted that she spends a lot of time developing and creating content that resonates with her followers, and that’s why she chose to register her brand with BIPA to make sure that her hard work will not be used by others without her knowledge.
Ockert Jansen, Executive: Marketing, Corporate Communications, and Client Management Services noted “All creatives who register their trademark will be conferred the exclusive right to the use of such a trademark and as such retain the goodwill amongst the clients, which will make their brand attractive and reputable; and above all enhance their intellectual assets portfolio. The protection will further deter counterfeiters from using protected trademarks which cause confusion in the marketplace.”
Now if you’re sitting there thinking: “Mmmmmm, this sounds great but it’s probably a long and dragged-out process and I don’t have time for it.” Stop that train of thought right there, because BIPA has made it so simple and easy with just 10 steps to get your brand protected for the next 10 years.
