Powering our Future: Geoparks

We were recently joined by Senior Geoscientist Josephine Uushona, from the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy. She shed light on Namibia’s ambition to develop its first UNESCO Global Geopark, which is a milestone in heritage-based economic development.

Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas with international geological significance and some of the impacts include the integration of local communities into geoscience awareness, tourism, and land use planning.

They also enhance cross-sector collaboration between the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, and community stakeholders.

Such infrastructures are best managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development, often involving tourism, conservation, and research.
