Strengthening Africa’s Seismic Science – Namibia Hosts the 4th General Assembly of the AfSC


Namibia is set to take center stage in the field of seismology as it hosts the 4th General Assembly of the African Seismological Commission (AfSC) from 24 – 28 February 2025 at Avani Hotel, Windhoek. This prestigious event, hosted by the Geological Survey of Namibia under the Ministry of Mines and Energy, will bring together over 50 leading experts, researchers, and policymakers from across the continent.

In a recent interview, Ms. Mako Sitali, Geoscientist at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that it serves as a critical platform for advancing Africa’s understanding of seismic activity, earthquake monitoring, and geoscience research. Discussions will cover technological advancements, scientific collaboration, and the role of seismology in global security efforts.

Beyond scientific experts, the assembly is an opportunity for students, researchers, investors, and policymakers to gain valuable insights into the field of seismology and its impact on disaster preparedness, environmental monitoring, and economic development.
