UNLOCKED OPPORTUNITIES: Study in Japan or Level Up Your Sustainability Skills

If studying in Japan or building your skills in climate and sustainability sounds like something you’d be interested in, here are two opportunities worth knowing about this week.

One could help you pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Japan with Japanese government scholarship support. The other offers selected participants 100% funded online sustainability courses connected to the University of Cambridge.

2027 MEXT Scholarships — University of Osaka, Japan

Fancy studying in Japan? The Japanese Government’s MEXT Scholarship could help make that possible.

For the 2027 intake, the University of Osaka is accepting international students through the MEXT scholarship programme at undergraduate and graduate level. That includes opportunities for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies. 

There are two main routes: Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation.

For undergraduate applicants applying through the embassy route, candidates are initially screened by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country. At graduate level, successful applicants generally begin as research students before progressing to a master’s or doctoral programme, subject to the relevant entrance requirements.

1 September 2026 is the deadline for graduate applicants who have already passed the first embassy screening and need to request a Letter of Acceptance from the University of Osaka through its Admissions Assistance Desk. This is not the general MEXT application deadline. 

So, if Japan is on your academic bucket list, this is one to investigate now.

100% Funded Cambridge Sustainability Courses

Now, what if you don’t need a degree, but you do want to build specialised knowledge in sustainability, climate change, biodiversity or environmental law?

There is another opportunity offering selected participants 100% funded places on online sustainability coursesthrough the Democratising Education for Global Sustainability and Justice (DemEd Global) programme. 

The 2026 programme includes three courses:

• The Sustainable Development Goals and the Law — 28 September–9 October
• Convention on Biological Diversity, Sustainable Development and the Law — 12–23 October
• The Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development and the Law — 26 October–6 November 

The courses are delivered online and focus on the connection between sustainability, law, policy and global environmental commitments.

This could be particularly useful for students, researchers, policymakers, legal professionals, development practitioners and people working in sustainability.
