World Snake Day 2025

Snakes are often feared as dangerous and deadly, but in reality, nearly 80% of snake species are harmless to people!
Human development leads to habitat loss, and results in snakes ending up in our environments and homes more often. Even though we see them as a threat, snakes actually play a vital role in keeping rodent populations under control. “They help us by eating rats and mice that would otherwise damage our homes and our health.”
Snakes are among the most misunderstood animals on the planet. Let’s debunk some common myths 👇
❌ MYTH: “All snakes are venomous and dangerous.”
✅ FACT: Only 7% of African snake species are dangerously venomous to humans.
❌ MYTH: “Snakes attack humans unprovoked.”
✅ FACT: They are shy by nature and not inherently aggressive. Snakes usually avoid humans and only strike when they feel threatened.
❌ MYTH: “They serve no purpose.”
✅ FACT: Snakes help control rodent populations, serve as prey for other animals, support biodiversity, and play an essential role in healthy ecosystems.
On #WorldSnakeDay this week, let’s remember: Give snakes some space!
