President calls for stronger social protection across Africa

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged African ministers to place people at the centre of development by expanding social protection, creating decent jobs and protecting vulnerable groups in order to unlock the continent’s economic potential.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said this in a speech delivered by labour minister, Wise Immanuel, at the opening of the Sixth Ordinary Session of the African Union specialised technical committee on social development, labour and employment in Windhoek on Thursday.

With nearly 70% of Africa’s population under the age of 30, Immanuel said investing in young people through education, skills development and decent employment is key to unlocking the continent’s economic transformation.

He said member states must confront persistent challenges including inequality, poverty, climate change, labour migration and the rapid pace of technological change.
Immanuel said Namibia is strengthening its own social protection system through reforms guided by the Constitution.
Speaker of Namibia’s Children’s Parliament, Jane Phiri, says the young people must move from being beneficiaries of policies to being active participants.
