Safland Property Group and Oryx Properties make strides on Goreangab mall development

Safland Property Group and Oryx Properties Limited have announced significant progress on the highly anticipated Goreangab Mall development in Windhoek, Namibia. This shopping centre promises to be an invaluable resource for the Goreangab suburb, the greater Katutura area, and nearby communities. Bridging the gap, the shopping mall brings national retailers as well as essential services closer to this under-served community. The mall will considerably boost employment prospects, with an expected 340 jobs created during construction to be followed by 360 opportunities once operational.

The dedicated Safland team has been working diligently for four years to move the project forward, gaining momentum for construction to commence within this year. This 14,500 square metre development will host more than 40 tenants and will become a leading shopping destination for essentials and indulgences. Goreangab Mall will be anchored by Shoprite and offers on 60% of the available lettable space have already been secured from various retailers.

The shopping mall also marks the first collaboration between Safland and Oryx Properties

Safland Property Group and Oryx Properties have entered into a development partnership to combine expertise and resources to ensure the successful completion of the Goreangab Mall project. Both companies are synonymous with property in Namibia and are regarded as leaders in their respective fields. Safland is the leading developer of retail properties in Namibia and Oryx Properties is the only primary listed property fund on the NSX. Goreangab Mall is testament to both companies’ commitment to Namibia, together with its unwavering drive to bring development to underserviced parts of the Country create jobs through the process and make a difference.

Goreangab Mall, forms part of the greater Goreangab Waterfront Development that will include a further 2500 residential units that are currently under construction. This rapidly growing node is vastly underserviced, and residents have a lack access to any form of formal retail, banking and other services. A formal taxi rank will form part of the development to ensure convenient access for people from surrounding communities.

Kallie van Der Merwe, in his comments said that “The Safland team is thankful for the opportunity to further its commitment to develop properties in underserviced areas in Namibia”. The partnership with Oryx enabled us to deliver on this commitment. We remain extremely bullish about our future projects and other opportunities in Namibia as a whole. Safland will be developing 5 more retail shopping centres across Namibia and will start with construction on at least 3 of these during 2025.”

The CEO of Oryx, Ben Jooste, further exclaimed; “The Goreangab development fits our strategy to diversify our asset base and ESG commitments. Partnering with Safland made a lot of sense with this development as it allows both companies to use our strengths for the greater good of the community.”

The Goreangab site was handed over to the successful bidder, Namib Beton, on 2 September, to commence with the bulk earthwork.
