#TheTribeExclusive Featuring Nga-I

The one and only King of Trap, Nga-I chats to Ché about his music and dreams of making it big internationally on this episode of #TheTribeExclusive.

Declaring that he will be signed to Universal Music Group by 2020, the rapper

What’s it like for dreams to come true?

For the longest, I was told I was just making music for like you know my small set of following, but I was like yoh, the country is listening. It was mad blessings and I felt really proud, I felt really blessed because I was like jeez, I already have connections in the industry. Like I didn’t know, I didn’t know anyone, so for that to happen I was like damn, you know dreams can actually come true.

Who raised you?

Yoh, my parents. My parents, but mostly the sjambok.

The challenges that you faced, how did you get out of them and what were they?

I faced challenges of exposure. Just getting people to listen to the music. That is the hardest part because people don’t really listen to hip hop here.

I overcame it through prayer. I won’t lie.

What is the one thing you need that’s going to propel you to the next level?

Music, videos, visuals. I feel that because I do it in vernac, they may not really understand what I’m saying, so I just need visuals to kind of show and tell the story and say what I’m saying, because you know you might not understand the language, but with the writer, with the right visual artists, videographers I think we can make it happen. They will realise how great we actually are.

The NAMAS have introduced a brand new category. It used to be Best Male, Best Female, now they’ve actually got a category with Artist of the Year. How do you feel about that?

That’s pretty, it’s pretty nice. It’s pretty nice that they not making it a gender thing you know. I think it’s pretty cool that they are making it Artist of The Year. I feel like that’s dope because then it can maybe in the future, maybe when we have dancers and what not, even they could win. As long as it’s art and contributing to the industry.
