Carnivores; Data and Conservation

In this episode of the MYD Earth Show, we speak to Dr. Louisa-Richmond Coggan the founding partner of ConservationFIT, about large carnivore research and conservation.

“Resources in conservation are limited and time is always limited and so we need to be as effective as possible in our strategy.”

Through a nationwide project, teams are collecting data to ensure good conservation decisions can be made that will allow carnivores to live and thrive alongside communities.

With Leopard, before 2016 it was categorised as near threatened and then because of a large collaborative study, spearheaded by IUCN, it was then reclassified as vulnerable because in the last three generations 30% of the Leopards rangeland has been lost globally across it’s population. We’re seeing threats in terms of prey availability decline the illegal wildlife trade, furs being used in traditional cultures and then also the problem animal removal and different elements that have lead it to be up-listed to vulnerable because it is really under pressure.”

In this episode of the MYD Earth Show we find out :

  • What role carnivores play in an ecosystem
  • How you can support this research project
  • What this research will help with
