Environmental Practices That Benefit
The MYD Earth Show recently travelled to Oranjemund in the South of Namibia to find out how mining can co-exist with protecting the environment.
In this episode of the show, we speak to Nande Nickanor the Environmental Management Coordinator for Systems at Namdeb Diamond Corporation, based in the town of Oranjemund.
“This is a process that we have been following even in the absence of the Environmental Management Act and it’s associated regulations. We were using the environmental assessment policy in those days, before even the Environmental Act came into force. It has been within us, it’s the way we do business.”
Nande explains about the history and the future of mining and the earth, as well as about how adopting environmental practices is a benefit to companies and communities.
“We’re not just doing it for our customer satisfaction; we are doing it for the environment. We are involved in a lot of scientific studies that we are sponsoring, whether it is our invertebrates, or whether it is our birds, or whether it is our beaches where we are doing accretion. We are involved in restoration programs, we are involved with the National Botanical Research Institute where we are trying to preserve seeds in partnership with the millennium seed bank project.”
In this MYD show podcast we find out:
- About some of the progressive environmental practices at Namdeb Diamond Corporation
- How the company has used sound environmental practices since before it was law to do so
- What benefits there are to an organisation to put the environment first
- Nande’s message about the environment and climate change
