A father of two from Ohangwena Region says free facial reconstructive surgeries have transformed the lives of his children, giving them the confidence to interact freely as they now no longer have cleft lips or palates.
Vataleni Wilhelm shared his experience after his daughters, five-year-old Helena and two-year-old Angy, who were both born with cleft lips and palates, underwent the surgeries through the Nampharm Foundation.
Each procedure can cost as much as $100 000.
Wilhelm said the physical transformation is remarkable, adding his daughters’ energetic personalities remained unchanged despite undergoing such major surgeries.
The Nampharm Foundation’s Manager, Carol Musarurwa, explained that July is Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Month, and is aimed at raising public awareness.
Administrative and Fundraising Coordinator Cari-Ané van der Walt said the foundation’s annual awareness walk will take place on 25 July at Rhino Park Private Hospital.
