Kabula wants Govt to buy Kalimbeza rice for drought relief

Zambezi region governor, Dorothy Kabula, is calling on the government to procure rice from the Kalimbeza Irrigation Scheme for its drought relief programme.  

During the State of Regional Address in Katima Mulilo on Monday, Kabula said the move would support local farmers while strengthening food security.   

Kabula says the scheme harvested 137 tonnes of rice from 46 hectares and has urged the Office of the Prime Minister to procure the crop for drought and flood relief.   

She said an estimated N$40 million was spent on planting, weeding and bird-scaring tactics during the production season.  

However, the governor says the scheme continues to face major setbacks including a partially repaired rice processing machine, and a rice sorter that has been out of service since 201 

“I therefore call upon Disaster Risk Management under the Office of the Prime Minister to prioritise Kalimbeza rice for distribution during drought relief and flood relief programmes to clear the stock at the Kalimbeza Rice Project,” she said.  

Kabula also reported progress at the Wenela No. 2029 Irrigation Scheme, now managed by the Namibia Correctional Service, and at the 500-hectare Mango Vuluzi Farm in Singalamwe.   

“I am happy to report that massive progress has been made on infrastructure, including pipes, pivots and pumps. The project is progressing well,” she said.
