Losing Yourself and Finding Yourself in Dance
Mcbreaton Pieters is a Namibian dancer, dance instructor and the founder and owner of the Fusion Funk Dance Studio. His passion is dancing and so he decided to take that passion and share it with others in the form of a dance school. 99FM’s MYD Art sat down with the dedicated dancer to talk about how determination, passion and sometimes losing your job can help set you on the path of your dreams.
“I was very determined to make something of myself. I think everything in life works that way, if you are determined and you work hard at it, it’ll happen. I’m in a good place, I’ve grown and my personality supports the industry that I’m in, which is important. I’ve been around for 6 years so I must be doing something right.” Say Mc Mcbreaton.
Fusion Funk Dance Studio combines many different styles of dance, including Creative dance, Latin, Ballroom, Hip Hop and more. Mcbreaton explains that his studio is performance based because, “Performing and dancing in front of people builds up the confidence levels of our dancers. As a dancer, I too struggled with low self-esteem until I started dancing. Dance affected my life positively and that is why I want to share dance, especially with the youth of Namibia. This is why I have even taken my dance classes to orphanages, and it has affected the kids in a positive way. It helps with their homework and their concentration and makes them feel like they’re wanted in a space, which is very important for any child.”
“We use an international curriculum so that dancers can continue anywhere else in the world if they want to. I’ve had ten students who qualified for the Dancing World Championships in 2015, and right now we are in the semi-finals of the World Championships of Performing Arts. That’s something I’m very proud of.”
When asked about passion, Mcbreaton says that to be stuck in something you do not love is not worth it. “I’ve done that before. I was an accountant and dancing was a part time thing and then my boss fired me because she saw my true passion. She told me that she was passionate about writing but was working as a bookkeeper. It was a wake-up call for me and made me decide to start my own company doing what I love. ”
“I have to dance. It’s a part of who I am; it’s part of my character. There is not a day when I’m not moving. Dancing is healthy, it keeps your mind healthy, helps you focus and concentrate. It’s a break away from everything else. I even have people who come and dance ballroom with their partners to grow their relationship and make their bonds stronger. Dancing works in mysterious ways and I feel like people should try it out.
