The MYD Show – We Are Because of One Another with Dr. Ruben Kanime
Dr. Ruben Kanime hails from a village in the Omusati region. His exceptional grades afforded him the opportunity to study medicine aboard on scholarship, but this meant he had to learn a foreign language to be able to study.
His determination and passion made him the first medical doctor, not only in his family but also in his village.
“When I graduated people were happy, there was celebration in my village. The expectation was also high. The calling comes with a lot of responsibility, not only in the clinical setting but also from my community.”
Now he works tirelessly to help build communities and help others in need.
“I was brought up not only by my biological parents but also by the community. The spirit of Ubuntu, a person is a person because of others. I believe that we should not live in isolation, we are all human beings and we are connected.”
In this MYD show podcast we find out:
- Why Dr. Kanime chose medicine
- What is was like to live in Russia as a Namibian
- Why Dr. Kanime chose to rather have his father honoured when his community wanted to honour him, by naming a school after him
