The MYD Show – Spend a Moment in My Reality with Hector Mawonga
Hector Mawonga was diagnosed with mental illness in university yet today he is a multiple award winning sports journalist. He spoke out about his illness on the MYD Show a few years back and was even featured in the first edition of the MYD Journal.
“A lot of people think especially with depression and not only bi-polar but all kinds of depression, they say just snap out of it, why are you acting up, what’s wrong with you and they don’t realise there is a chemical imbalance in your body that is causing all of this.”
In this episode of the MYD Show Hector joins us in studio again to talk about the changes his life made, for the better, since he spoke openly about his illness.
“Having spoken up it has given me that sense of power, of knowing that whatever happens, I know where to go to get help number one and I also know now, what I can tell somebody who is in a similar situation.”
In this MYD show podcast we find out:
- How speaking out about his illness empowered Hector
- Why empathy has gone a long way in Hectors life
- What he learnt through dealing with mental illness
- Hectors advice for anyone in a similar situation
