Sister Hileni Samuel through her 23 years of experience in the nursing fraternity, saw the need for specialised diabetic treatment in Namibia and as such she opened a Diabetic and Wound Care Clinic in Windhoek, a first of it’s kind in Namibia. In addition she has been travelling around Namibia providing equipment and education around diabetes, at her own cost.
“Since I opened the clinic, I started to see that a lot of people are not aware, of diabetes. So I started to do awareness creation.”
In this episode of the MYD Show, Sister Hileni shares her story, as well as dispels myths and talks warning signs when it comes to diabetes.
“To learn about the complications because people will not die because their sugars or diabetes, but the complications that comes with it. The long term affects on the big arteries of the body, especially the veins to your heart or your brain, your kidneys, or your legs. Every 20 seconds somebody is loosing his or her leg or feet or toe, because of these complications, that can be avoided.”
