Leaving as Little a Mark
In this episode of the MYD Earth Show we speak to Julien Cloete, about rehabilitation and mining. Julien is the Environmental Management Coordinator for Rehabilitation at Namdeb Diamond Corporation, based in Oranjemund, and has been working on projects of rehabilitation in the Sperrgebiet National Park.
“I am very excited about it because I am a true ‘greenie’ at heart. Often times legal is the biggest drive behind mining companies complying with environmental management and environmental laws, but I would also like to think that there’s a bit of ethics involved and that we are conscious of the environment and the whole sustainability notion of not taking up everything now, not using up everything now, but to leave something for the generations to come. So, I’m quite excited about that because if I look at the situation in South Africa, where there’s also years and years of mining impacts and people just got up and left, and now it’s a problem for the government because those areas are like sterilised, you can’t use it ever again. So I am very happy if my fellow Namibians are taking responsibility for the impacts that we are having, because at the end of the day, although we say a diamond is forever, it’s actually finite, it will end, one or other way, it will end… and then what about the Earth.”
Julien shares here, on how responsible mining today aims towards no impact on the environment.
