Sewing Self Belief to Stitch Change
“When I was younger I would sneak into my mother’s wardrobe and try on her clothes, putting on her pretty dresses and high heels along with bright red lipstick.”
Stark contrasts form the backdrop and the landscape, a designers dream which is why more and more fashion designers are feeling inspired to make their mark in Namibia. 99FM’s MYD Art sat down with one such fashion designer based in Swakopmund, Leandrie Rosemund, whose following is growing steadily.
99FM’s MYD Art asked :
Tell us about what it is that you do?
As a qualified fashion designer, I design and produce all my collections in Swakopmund from my studio. I specialise in women’s apparel and am busy expanding my ranges through to menswear, kiddies, babies and decor. Most of my inspiration comes from our beautiful country, Namibia. My designs are ready to wear garments. The fabrics and colours I like to work with are a true reflection of the natural elements.
What inspired you to get into fashion design?
I was always interested in all forms of art and from a young age drawing was part of who I am. When I was younger I would sneak into my mother’s wardrobe and try on her clothes, putting on her pretty dresses and high heels along with bright red lipstick. I always had an interest in fashion but it was in high school that I really started to focus on this. I would spend my afternoons trying to manufacture my designs and see them come to life with my mother’s sewing machine.
What has been the most difficult obstacle you’d had to overcome?
The most difficult obstacle I had to overcome regarding my business, is to continue believing in myself after multiple let-downs.
Why do you think people are afraid of change?
Change takes us out of our comfort zone, which can be frightening.
How can one embrace change?
Let go and Let God!
