President heads to South Africa for SACU Summit

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to participate in the 9th Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Summit of Heads of State and Government in Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday.

The summit brings together leaders from the five SACU member states to discuss regional economic integration, industrial development, trade cooperation, and the future direction of the customs union.

Presidential spokesperson, Jonas Mbambo, wrote in a media release on Thursday that the meeting presents an opportunity to push for a more adaptive and forward-looking SACU amid changing global economic conditions.

“As SACU’s highest decision-making body, the Summit provides strategic and political direction to the organisation, sets its priorities, and oversees the implementation of its programmes and initiatives,” he said.

The summit will convene heads of state and government from Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa, alongside senior government officials and regional representatives.

Mbambo said the key issues on the agenda include the progress report on the implementation and mid-term review of SACU’s Strategic Plan for 2022 to 2027.

“The summit presents an important opportunity for Namibia to advocate for a SACU that is adaptive to Africa’s evolving financial and economic landscape while remaining relevant and responsive to the needs and aspirations of its member states,” he said.

Mbambo said Namibia will continue to champion a forward-looking SACU that deepens regional economic integration and strengthens trade cooperation across the region.

He said the President is expected to travel to Cape Town on Friday morning and return to Namibia later the same day.
