Are The Gentle Giants Disappearing?
Giraffes are an emblem of Africa, yet a new discovery means worrying news for the species. In Namibia, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the work of both Julian and Steph Fennessy has given scientists tangible data to work with when it comes to giraffe conservation. This is especially important with the recent discovery of the fact that there are more than one species of giraffe in Africa, meaning efforts can be targeted at the places where assistance is most needed. With this revelation comes the news that certain species of Giraffe are critically endangered.
99FM’s MYD Earth sat down with Steph Fennessy, the Programme Director at the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, to talk about what the discovery of new Giraffe species means and also about the exciting project that has seen the work done by Julian and Steph Fennessy being made into a BBC documentary, narrated by David Attenbourgh.
Here are some of the areas covered in this episode of MYD Earth :
- The recently discovered new Giraffe species and what this means for Giraffe conservation in Africa
- The shocking revelation that some species of Giraffe face extinction
- The making of a BBC documentary being made about the work of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation
- How you can get to see the documentary film about Giraffes in Africa
