The Importance of Environmental Education

When you have experienced something you can appreciate it. This is a philosophy of an environmental education centre that is making a difference in the lives of many Namibian children. MYD Earth travelled to the Otjozondjupa Region to find out first hand why education centres, such as these, that teach children about our natural world, are so important. The education centre in question is situated at B2Gold’s Otjikoto Mine and looks to inspire a love of nature in children through teaching them about nature, fauna, flora and survival skills.

In this episode of MYD Earth we spoke to B2Gold’s Managing Director, Mark Dawe, about the role companies have in protecting our natural world. We also spoke to the enthusiastic environmental educators at B2Gold’s education centre, AJ Rousseau, the education coordinator and Simeon Nampala the environmental educator, who explain why education of this nature benefits our country.

Here are some of the areas covered in this episode of MYD Earth:

  • The responsibility of organisations that take from the earth, to put back into the earth and her inhabitants
  • What exposure can do for a child in terms of their future contribution to society
  • The importance of environmental education for children as the future custodians of our wildlife
  • Smart partnerships between B2Gold and the Little Shop of Physics in Colorado that is enabling physical science teachers in Namibia
